A Global Deal For Nature (GDN) paper published
With support from One Earth, a team of scientists led by RESOLVE published, “A Global Deal For Nature (GDN): Guiding principles, milestones, and targets.” This paper introduced the ambitious 30x30 and 50% global conservation targets and made the scientific case for protecting half of nature.
GDN petition to protect 50% of lands and oceans launched
Simultaneously, in collaboration with AVAAZ and with support from over 100 Indigenous organizations, One Earth launched the Global Deal for Nature website and petition calling on world leaders to protect 50% of Earth’s lands and oceans while recognizing Indigenous land rights.
A Global Safety Net (GSN) paper published
Marking a critical advancement, RESOLVE in collaboration with One Earth, University of Minnesota, Arizona State University, and Globaïa, published ‘A ‘Global Safety Net’ (GSN) to reverse biodiversity loss and stabilize Earth’s climate.’ The GSN is the first comprehensive global-scale analysis of terrestrial areas essential for biodiversity and climate resilience, totaling 50.4% of the Earth's land.
Globalsafetynet.app launched
To make the GSN science more accessible, One Earth, in partnership with Google Earth and data visualization studio Graphicacy, developed and launched the globalsafetynet.app, an interactive web application that visualizes the GSN layers of any location. This open-source initiative helps guide conservation efforts by providing up-to-date global data.
Restoring large mammal assemblages paper published
A RESOLVE-led study supported by One Earth, An ecoregion-based approach to restoring the world’s intact large mammal assemblages, shows that rewilding 20 large mammal species to their historic habitats could restore 1/4 of Earth’s terrestrial ecosystems.
Mature & Old Growth Forests (MOG) paper published
The study, Mature and old-growth forests contribute to large-scale conservation targets in the conterminous United States, presents a comprehensive map of the US’s mature and old-growth temperate forests, essential for conservation efforts, with expansion plans into Canada, Mexico, and Europe.
Priorities for Protected Areas Expansion paper published
A One Earth-supported paper by leading conservation experts, Priorities for protected area expansion so nations can meet their Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework commitments, lays out six principles that can guide governments to achieve high-quality protected area networks, giving us the best chance of reversing biodiversity loss while upholding the rights of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities.
Conservation Imperatives paper published
The latest research effort from the Global Safety Net (GSN) initiative, titled “Conservation Imperatives: Securing the Last Unprotected Terrestrial Sites Harboring Irreplaceable Biodiversity”, was published in Frontiers in Science. The paper identifies biodiversity havens, totaling 1.2% of the Earth’s land, which are home to rare but currently unprotected animal and plant species.
Upgraded GSN Interactive Map launched
In conjunction with the Conservation Imperatives paper's release, One Earth in partnership with Octophin Digital launched a brand-new GSN interactive map with enhanced resolution and improved functionality, making the Global Safety Net data easier to access and understand.
The Global Deal for Nature and Global Safety Net papers establish the scientific foundation for the 50% conservation target. Whereas the GDN established the necessity of protecting half of nature, the GSN provides a blueprint for exactly where protection is most needed.
